We are proud to reflect on our journey from a production studio to a forward-thinking publishing platform dedicated to amplifying African voices in comics, web novels and animation.
As we transition into this new era, our mission is clear:
– To partner with African creators and comic studios across the continent.
– Bringing authentic African storytelling to audiences worldwide while enabling creators to sustainably monetize their content. Our commitment to this transformation is focused on building an ecosystem where African narratives and talents can flourish globally.
Through The Years
Our journey began long before the spotlight found us. Officially established in 2020, our first public appearance as a studio was at the Lagos Comic Con 2021. This event was a milestone—it offered us a platform to showcase our stories on an international stage, connect with fellow creators, and engage with fans passionate about African comics. Just a year later, in 2022, we were honored to receive the “New Emerging Studio of the Year” award at the Ibadan Comic Con, a testament to our dedication and the strength of our storytelling.
In just two years, we’ve built a strong, organic and genuine community of over 5,000 fans across social media and our WhatsApp group. With their support, we sold over 2,000 copies of our comics, reached thousands of readers, and collaborated with respected brands. Alongside these sales, we’ve engaged audiences through brand collaborations and community initiatives.
We have organized several art contest in the art community, given out commission referals and the just concluded African creator’s contest validates our zeal to inspire more creators from Africa. we also organized a community event in Magboro, Ogun State, to inspire young talents through competitions and educational activities, fostering a new generation of creators.
Our momentum continued with a successful return to the Lagos Comic Con, Lagos and PH Comic Con in Port Harcourt, Nigeria in 2023 where we saw impressive turnout and record-breaking sales, further solidifying our presence and expanding our reach to a broader, enthusiastic audience in Nigeria.
The Current Moment
This year, 2024, marks a transformative phase for SMcomics as we expand our global vision. We’ve taken bold steps to connect with international publishers, diasporian African communities and gather insights into African content distribution through our presence at AfroComicCon and CollectorsCon in Canada. These experiences have strengthened our resolve to bridge the gap between local talent and global audiences, enabling creators to sustainably monetize their content.
Stepping forward as a publishing studio committed to solving the distribution challenges African creators face, we are not only deepening our commitment to comics but also beginning to embrace animation and web novels as an integral part of our journey. This is a work in progress and we are ready to work with talented African creators and studios, providing them with a platform that reaches audiences far and wide. we look forward to collaborating with animation studios and novel writers who share our dream of amplifying African narratives. Our goal is to create a sustainable model where creators can monetize their content, access new audiences, and realize the full potential of their work.
At SMcomics, We believe in the power of African stories but most importantly the power of our togetherness focused on achieving same goal and we are here to make sure of it.
